Spotlight: SPIRE Institute

Sports

Want to train like an Olympian at an affordable price? Then read on!

The SPIRE Institute is an official U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center. Founder Ron Clutter says Spire's true purpose is to be a place where anyone with the desire to improve their life can come and be inspired. And inspired you will be; this $60 million+ facility boasts over 750,000 square feet of training space under three roofs, in addition to an outdoor track and football stadium. It's no wonder they have hosted many collegiate competitions, such as the Big 10 Indoor Track & Field Championships, the Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships, and in the future, the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships.

The coaches at SPIRE also add to its wow-factor. Michael Johnson, the Olympic Gold-medalist, runs SPIRE's Performance Institute. The swimming program is led by Jim Bocci, Olympic Gold, Silver, and Bronze medalist Diana Munz, and USA Swimming Hall of Fame coach Jerry Holtrey. The Track & Field program is led by Charlie Powell, who has coached Olympians, Australian National Champions, 18 NCAA All-Americans, and many more. These are just a few of the very talented individuals that make up SPIRE's professional team. Whatever the sport, SPIRE's coaches are at the top of the game.

Accommodations: SPIRE’s High School Academy students board at Andrews Osborne Academy (AOA). AOA’s seven dormitories are large homes housing between eight to twenty-four boarders.  Staff members living in the dorms are responsible for the security, health and well being of boarders.  In overseeing the daily life in the dorms, they keep boarders on schedule for camp sessions, account for their whereabouts, and coordinate boarders’ needs with camp staff and parents.  While the majority of rooms house two students, there are a few that hold three or four.  Bathrooms are shared.
